Jazz established itself emotionally in me, not to dance to but to live by. It felt more natural to approach the world with the imaginative fellowship and elastic rhythm of jazz than with the mechanically melancholic marching music I experienced as a child.
Some of my pictures have been interpreted as musical scores. I have even heard that they ‘swing’. Such comments do not feel foreign. In the fundamental form and structure of my imagery there exists – just as in jazz – a capricious balancing between emotion, method and improvisation.
